Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (for laminating)
  • 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • Optional toppings: fresh berries, fruit preserves

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Mix warm milk with yeast; let sit until foamy. Add egg and yeast mixture to dry ingredients, mixing until dough forms. Knead for about 6–8 minutes until smooth. Chill for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the butter block: Shape cold butter into an 8-inch square between parchment sheets and chill.
  3. Laminate the dough: Roll chilled dough into a square, place butter in the center, fold corners over it, roll into a long rectangle, then fold like a letter. Chill and repeat rolling twice more.
  4. Shape danishes: Roll final dough to 1/4-inch thickness; cut into squares and fill with cream cheese mixture. Shape as desired.
  5. Rise and bake: Let shaped danishes rise on baking sheets for an hour while preheating oven to 390°F (200°C). Brush with egg wash or milk; bake for 15–20 minutes until golden.
  6. Glaze before serving: Cool completely and drizzle with glaze made from powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
